Meet Claire Richmond
UI graduate student works on thesis at PCHTF
Hi, I’m Claire. I am a graduate student at the University of Iowa, pursuing degrees in public health and urban planning. This fall I am happy to be working with the Polk County Housing Trust Fund on my thesis project, which will involve obtaining public input on needs related to affordable housing. I am interested in ways the built environment impacts health and well-being, and this project will allow me to explore health outcomes specific to affordable housing in Greater Des Moines.
Using housing-related research from local sources and The Tomorrow Plan, I will work with PCHTF staff to develop and distribute a survey assessing housing needs in the area. I hope to gather responses reflective of the community’s need for housing options, and determine the prevalence of health outcomes that may be attributed to inadequate housing. My final report will analyze the responses and provide the Housing Tomorrow Steering Committee with recommendations for next steps.
I spent the summer in downtown and worked for the Greater Des Moines Age-Friendly City Initiative at the AARP Iowa office; I loved my time in Des Moines and hope to return once I graduate in December. I currently live in Iowa City and am a graduate assistant at the Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities. Prior to enrollment at the University of Iowa, I worked as a graphic designer at National Geographic Learning in Boston and volunteered with AmeriCorps in Pensacola, Florida. I hold a B.S. in Marketing and Public Relations from Stephens College, and enjoy incorporating visual design elements into my planning and public health projects.
