Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity Home Preservation Program

The program can provide up to $6,000 in no-cost assistance to homeowners for a wide variety of home repairs focused on exterior improvements, weatehrization, critical repairs, aging in place, and accessibility improvement.

What services does the program provide?

Up to $10,000 in assistance is available with a 50% forgivable, 50% non-forgivable lien. There are no up front out-of-pocket costs. Mobile home repairs up to $5,000 are allowed. An owner may receive assistance one time in a five year period. Repairs are subject to availability of funding.


The Home Preservation program is designed to complete repairs to help homeowners remain safely and comfortably in their homes. Repairs may include critical systems repairs, accessibility modifications, preventative repairs/preservation, deferred repairs, and/or weatherization.

Who is eligible?

The Home Preservation program serves low-income homeowners who earn between 0-60% of the Area Median Income and veteran households who earn up to 80% of the Area Median Income. The applicant’s assessed home value must be no more than $250,000 and they must occupy the home as their primary residence to qualify for assistance.

How does someone apply?

Polk County residents can apply for OOR assistance by submitting an inquiry form found on GDM Habitat’s website. Alternatively, requests for assistance can be made in person at 95 University Avenue, over the phone by calling 515-657-7988, or requested via email at repairs@gdmhabitat.org.


A GDM Habitat staff member will contact inquiries to submit a complete application on a first come first served basis as funding is available. Applications may be completed online, in-person at 95 University Avenue, or physically mailed. GDM Habitat Staff are available to answer any questions regarding the application over the phone or in person. Interpreter services are available if needed.
