Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity Home Preservation Program
The program can provide up to $6,000 in no-cost assistance to homeowners for a wide variety of home repairs focused on exterior improvements, weatehrization, critical repairs, aging in place, and accessibility improvement.
What can the program do?
Home Preservation: Exterior painting, window, siding/trim repair, preservation landscaping, debris removal, tree trimming off of the house. Weatherization: Program offers BPI-certified assessment for extensive weatherization audit, including blower door & combustible appliance testing. Caulking, weather stripping, door sweeps, window replacement, furnace replacement, insulating (walls, attic). Critical Home Repair: Siding replacement, roof repair/replacement, gutter replacement, sidewalk replacement, plumbing, electrical, heating, emergency water heater replacement; Aging in Place and Accessibilty: ramps, widen doorways, bathtub cutouts.
Who is eligible?
Household income must be at or below 60% of area median income for the the applicant's county (80% for a veteran household). Appraised home value must be less than $237,500. Home must be current on mortgage and property taxes. The home must be owner occupied. Applicant must perform 8 hours of sweat equity service. Homeowners purchasing a home on contract are eligible if the contract is recorded with the Polk County Assessor.
What other policies apply?
Up to $6,000 in assistance available with a forgivable loan and deferred payment. Beyond $6,000 subject to statement of work and repayment options. Mobile homes up to $3,500 No up front costs, there is a forgivable and non-forgivable deferred loan are placed on the property An owner may receive assistance one time in a five year period. Repairs over $2,000 will require a deferred loan.
