New Housing Solutions
HOME Inc. presents Clark Commons
HOME, Inc. recently began construction on its latest affordable housing development project, Clark Commons. Clark Commons is an affordable housing and neighborhood redevelopment project located on the corner of 13th and Clark Street in Des Moines. This two-phase project will provide both supportive rental housing and homeownership opportunities for low-income families.
Phase I of the Clark Commons project will result in the development of 5 units of permanent, affordable rental housing for homeless women and their children transitioning from the House of Mercy. HOME, Inc. will build 2 duplexes and 1 single family, three bedroom units renting for $550 per month. The tenants will continue to receive supportive services from the House of Mercy that is located one block west of the site.
Phase II of the project targets abandoned or foreclosed housing on Clark Street for redevelopment for low income homeownership. HOME, Inc. recently purchased and demolished a deteriorated house on Clark Street. The house had been targeted by the City and two neighborhood associations as a potential public nuisance. Although the 1880 house could not be saved, HOME, Inc. worked with the River Bend Neighborhood Association on salvaging mantels, wood work, stained glass windows and plumbing fixtures for historic rehab projects. The large lot will be used for 2 new single-family units, offering new opportunities for affordable homeownership.
HOME, Inc. thanks our following funder partners for their support: PHASE I: Bankers Trust, Federal Home Loan Bank, City of Des Moines and the Polk County Housing Trust Fund. PHASE II: Wells Fargo Housing Foundation, Polk County Housing Trust Fund and City of Des Moines.
