Hawthorn Hill renovates two north side homes
This summer, Hawthorn Hill purchased two single-family homes from the City of Des Moines that were previously used for the City's public housing program. The homes had been vacant for a number of years, and in need of renovations, especially the interiors.
Hawthorn Hill purchased the homes to add to the housing inventory for its permanent supportive housing program, The Home Connection. The Home Connection provides affordable housing and supportive services for very low income homeless families with children. The Home Connection program works with the families to help them attain financial independence and break the cycle of poverty through employment.
Hawthorn Hill was awarded funding from the Polk County Housing Trust Fund to help with the much needed renovations for the two homes. Hawthorn Hill partnered with HOME Inc. to have the local nonprofit serve as general contractor for the renovations. Hawthorn Hill also completed some of the renovation work and utilized volunteers for painting and landscape work.
The two homes are located at 1427 8th Street and 1709 Gillette Street in Des Moines. The renovations for the two homes were just completed in November. Families are scheduled to move into the homes the first of December.
