New Housing Solutions
CHI: Valley Station
Community Housing Initiatives, Inc. (CHI), the City of West Des Moines, Iowa Economic Development Authority and many others held the Valley Station groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, Sept. 30. The groundbreaking signified the start of construction of the Valley Station project, a 52-unit senior living complex located adjacent to Historic Valley Junction. The project is mixed income rental housing — both affordable and market rate — for seniors age 55 and older, and is scheduled to be complete in Fall 2014.
“Community Housing Initiatives is very pleased to partner with the City of West Des Moines and the Iowa Economic Authority on the Valley Station project,” said Doug LaBounty, president of CHI. “This project will bring much needed senior rental housing to West Des Moines.”
Valley Station will be two, three-story buildings of two-bedroom units that feature laundry in each unit, open kitchen, a garage and many more amenities. Rents will range from $585 to $775.
The Valley Station project will be the second senior project that CHI has completed in West Des Moines over the last few years. In July 2011, CHI celebrated the grand opening of Crestview Terrace Apartments (916 Ashworth Road), a property that offers a mixture of one and two-bedroom apartments for seniors age 55 and older.
“The Valley Station project is a statement to the vitality of the Valley Junction area,” said Steve Gaer, mayor of West Des Moines. “New development is thriving in the oldest part of our city. The addition of 52 units of mixed income senior rental housing to the neighborhood will provide more diverse housing options to the citizens of West Des Moines. These units will also compliment the senior housing community center being built on 6th Street.”
