Lobby Day 2012

Lobby Day 2012

On Monday February 20th, 2012 the Polk County Housing Trust Fund, along with Chariton Valley Housing Trust Fund (Appanoose, Lucas, Monroe and Wayne counties), Council of Governments Housing Inc. (Audubon, Carroll, Crawford, Greene, Guthrie and Sac counties), Housing Trust Fund of Johnson County, Housing Fund for Linn County and Northeast Iowa Regional Housing Trust Fund (Allamakee, Clayton, Howard and Winneshiek counties) attended the State Housing Trust Fund Lobby Day at the Iowa State Capitol.  Once volunteers were able to track down key legislators time was spent encouraging them to continue supporting their local housing trust funds by making full funding available in the state’s budget.

Senator Matt McCoy, chair of the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Capitals Appropriation Subcommittee took time out of his busy day to sit down with several stakeholders of the Polk County Housing Trust Fund to assure them that he would fight for the $3,000,000 that was put in the budget by the Senate.  Senator McCoy acknowledged the importance of that funding to the programs offered by the Local Housing Trust Funds.

PCHTF had a strong showing from the Board of Directors as well as the Provider Partners for the day.  The additional support was greatly appreciated by the Trust Funds and clearly had a positive effect on the overall success of the day.

Governor Branstad made a stop by the Local Housing Trust Fund tables to shake hands and greet the volunteers that were present. Aside from Senator McCoy and Governor Branstad, the PCHTF spoke with, Representatives Kevin Koester, Jo Oldson and Chris Hagenow and Senators Jack Hatch and Bob Dvorsky.  David Boettger also stopped to talk.  Other legislators who were not at the Capitol that afternoon were left written materials.

The budget will now head to the House for its action.  Any differences from the Senate recommendation will be debated in a joint committee where a final decision will be made.
