Senator McCoy receives the 2012 Iowa Legislative Friend of Housing Award

Affordable Housing Champion

At a special reception on September 5, 2012 Senator Matt McCoy received the first annual Legislative Friend of Housing Award from the Iowa Housing Finance Authority.  The award was created to recognize an Iowa legislative leader whose work both on the Hill and as a private citizen has had significant impact on housing issues.

As Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Infrastructure and Capitals and as Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, McCoy has demonstrated meaningful leadership in setting an ambitious agenda for affordable housing in Iowa.  From these leadership positions Matt has advocated for increased state funding of affordable housing programs administered by the Iowa Finance Authority.  In particular, the senator has been a diligent supporter of increased funding for the State Housing Trust Fund.  The SHTF is the vehicle that allocates affordable housing dollars to 25 local housing trust funds for purposes of expanding and protecting affordable housing inventory in Iowa regions and counties.

Eric Burmeister, Executive Director of the Polk County Housing Trust Fund commented, “Senator McCoy understands that SHTF appropriations are matched with local and private dollars. With leverage ratios approaching 1:10 the annual SHTF appropriation of $6M is transformed into a $60M housing investment.  With Senator McCoy’s support and persistence literally thousands of affordable housing units have been built or benefited by State Housing Trust Fund dollars.  He can be counted on to drive the affordable housing conversation on the Hill.”
