A Degree and a Career
Shyeaka was going to school full time at William Penn and taking care of her 4-year-old daughter. She started falling behind on her bills and was no longer able to afford rent for her small apartment. She moved in with her brother and sister-in-law but it was a crowded and an uncomfortable living situation. A friend offered Shy and her daughter to live with her for awhile. After six months, Shy moved out and started bouncing from shelter to shelter. She ended up at Hawthorn Hill’s New Directions Shelter where she was given the opportunity to be a part of their The Home Connection program which is sponsored by the Polk County Housing Trust Fund. She and her daughter are now living in one of The Home Connection’s homes. Her daughter loves having her own yard to play in and her own bedroom!
Shy is currently working as a waitress but is looking for something with more consistent hours. She has one semester left before she receives her Associates Degree in Human Services. Shy plans on getting her degree while in The Home Connection program. She wants a career, not just a job. Shy’s goals also consist of working on managing her money better; paying off past debts; improving her credit score; and providing a stable home environment for her daughter once again.
