Community Housing Initiatives

Community Housing Initiatives, Inc. (CHI) is the newest provider funded by the PCHTF. Created in 1993, CHI was formed to address the lack of high-quality, safe and affordable housing options across the state of Iowa.

Following its mission “to cultivate opportunities for vibrant neighborhoods and communities,” and also utilizing three primary programs — New Construction, Historic Adaptive Re-Use, and Preservation of Affordable Housing — CHI has established itself as one of the most successful developers and managers of affordable rental housing in Iowa. Over the past 17 years, CHI has constructed or rehabilitated more than 1,200 affordable housing units in Iowa. In Polk County alone, CHI has acquired and rehabilitated 67 units of affordable housing since 2007. A shining example of high-quality affordable housing is Meredith Apartments, a 34-unit community nestled along a quiet, residential area. The units feature many Energy Star-rated appliances and provide spacious living for its residents.

CHI is currently rehabilitating 55 units of affordable housing for seniors at Crestview, 916 Ashworth Road, in West Des Moines. Crestview will begin leasing up on Aug. 1, 2011.
