Community Research & Planning
One of PCHTF’s primary responsibilities is understanding the community's affordable housing. Through use of collected data and sophisticated mapping technology, the Housing Trust Fund is able to help the community maintain an inventory that is properly balanced with need.
This data and analysis is the basis for creating a region-wide strategic plan for future affordable housing. Transportation, job centers, access to retail and medical services and proximity to schools all factor into determining where affordable housing is best suited. The PCHTF has the ability to merge all of these considerations into a metric that can evaluate the suitability of affordable housing to a specific location. It can also forecast population and job growth in a way that helps communities predict future need and take early steps to allow for affordable housing planning.
All of these functions were used to create Housing Tomorrow, Central Iowa’s first-ever regional plan for housing. Following the three-year planning process for The Tomorrow Plan, Housing Tomorrow offers housing policy best practices from around the country to help local governments face housing issues in the decades to come.
In addition, this research and planning function forms the basis for Polk County Housing Trust Fund activities. Nothing is advocated or funded unless it addresses a known need supported by research and the appropriate community data.
